Established in 1997, the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards celebrates its 30th edition in 2026 and has grown to become one of Africa’s leading wine and spirits competitions.
From the outset, one of Michelangelo’s distinguishing features has been its international perspective. The competition was created to give South African producers the opportunity to have their wines assessed locally by highly experienced wine professionals from around the world – providing an important international benchmark for both quality and style.
That philosophy remains central to the competition today, with respected international and local wine and spirits specialists forming part of the judging panel.
Michelangelo entries are evaluated blind, meaning the judges assess the wines without being influenced by the producer, brand or packaging.
Each entry is scored using the internationally recognised 100-point system, placing the focus entirely on the quality of the wine in the glass.
For a family wine producer such as Niel Joubert Wines, recognition through a competition of this standing is particularly meaningful. It is an independent acknowledgement of the work that begins in our vineyards and continues through every stage of the winemaking process.
These latest awards are therefore a wonderful endorsement of the commitment of Erni and the entire vineyard and cellar team, and another proud chapter in the Niel Joubert story.
