Although Niel Joubert Wines is very much a family business, it also has a small compliment of skilled and committed staff. That includes Erni Leicht, cellarmaster/winemaker here since October 2000, with in-depth knowledge of the vineyards and their potential. He has the freedom to experiment, which has in the past given rise to Reserve wines, and will doubtless also do so in the future.
The cellars under Erni’s control have been extensively modernised in recent years with as natural a flow as possible to avoid over-handling of the wines. There is a policy of minimum intervention, with the objective of honouring each vineyard and its fruit.
While important financial and strategic issues are discussed with Daan and Niel Jnr, Erni makes the day-to-day running decisions, using a hands-on approach in the cellar to create wines that realise their full potential, while still being delicious to drink.
